Dyslalia
WHAT IS DYSLALIA?
It is a speech disorder.
More specifically, dyslalia is defined as the difficulty in the articulation or pronunciation of one or more phonemes (sounds).
Dyslalia can be:
difficulty in pronouncing one or more sounds,
represented in the form of substitution, omission or distortion of a certain sounds.
What are the symptoms of dyslalia?
After the age of five, children can pronounce all phonemes well and without difficulty, although sometimes "R" takes a little longer.
At the age of six, the child should pronounce all the sounds of the Serbian language correctly.
What are the causes of dyslalia?
The main causes of dyslalia are:
Hearing problems: if a child cannot hear well, he/she learns to pronounce different sounds incorrectly.
Structural abnormality of the speech organs: there are malformations or defects in the organs that prevent us from speaking, such as the palate or lingual frenulum, which interferes with the tongue movements.
Inadequate speech model - baby talk.
Can dyslalia be prevented?
Dyslalia can potentially be prevented with an adequate speech model. However, sometimes prevention is not possible.
What is the treatment for dyslalia?
Depending on the cause, a speech therapist or an otorhinolaryngologist (ENT) will suggest therapy or treatment, which will be based on performing exercises to improve the muscles that serve to pronounce and enhance the articulation of sounds. When the cause of dyslalia is a malformation, surgical intervention may be required, which will facilitate faster progress in the speech therapy for dyslalia.
